logo-adrion-newThe URBANFLOODS project is born out of the recognition that effective flood management requires a comprehensive understanding at local and regional levels to devise suitable prevention and mitigation strategies. The project is committed to enhancing urban resilience and preparedness by collaboratively developing an advanced, integrated decision support system. It also aims to propose short-, medium-, and long-term actions, measures, and policy recommendations to local stakeholders for effective flood control. The project underscores the importance of raising awareness about climate change adaptation strategies, thereby fostering a proactive approach towards climate resilience.

The project’s overall objective is the joint development of innovative solutions for flood management based on a sophisticated information system, particularly targeting small rivers and streams that intersect urban areas.

The specific objectives of the project are the following:

  • Joint Development of a Unified Decision Support System (DSS): This entails the creation of an advanced, data-driven system that offers holistic solutions for flood management, including short/medium/long-term actions/measures/policy recommendations.
  • Strengthening Natural and Civil Protection Mechanisms: This objective is centered on enhancing existing natural and civil protection plans and strategies and introducing new measures to further shield the Adriatic-Ionian region from flood risks.
  • Establishing Protocols for Effective Practices, Transnational Strategies, and Action Plans: This objective involves identifying, documenting, and adopting successful strategies and action plans in flood management, which can serve as a reference for other regions facing similar challenges.
  • Cultivating Flood Awareness Among Local Communities: This objective seeks to improve the understanding of flood risks among local communities, encouraging a culture of preparedness and promoting proactive measures to mitigate potential impacts.

Activity:

Jointly developed solutions will be developed through case studies, exchange of experience and practical training, in parallel with the project’s pilot initiatives. Strategies and action plans will be jointly developed for flood prevention and mitigation by promoting climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention and resilience.

Furthermore, SVI.MED. will test in the municipalities of Scicli (RG) and Modica (RG) the Decision Support System (DSS) to manage flood control in the Modica-Scicli stream. A key expected outcome is to increase awareness of climate change adaptation strategies, thus encouraging a proactive attitude towards climate resilience.
